How to Make Dua: How Is a Supplication Made?
Learning how to make dua is simple: a supplication (dua) is the servant sincerely turning to Allah and asking of Him. In Islam, dua is defined as "the essence of worship." The etiquette of supplication includes:
- Being in a state of purity and facing the qiblah
- Raising the hands and beginning with praise of Allah
- Sending blessings upon the Prophet (salawat)
- Supplicating with sincerity and humility, aloud or silently
- Saying "Ameen" at the end and never losing hope
A supplication may be made in English, Arabic or any language. What matters most is the heart turning to Allah. The Quranic duas beginning with "Rabbana" (Our Lord), also known as short, beautiful supplications, contain the prophets' turning to Allah and are deeply meaningful.
The Difference Between a Supplication and a Verse
A verse is the actual wording of the Holy Quran revealed by Allah. Reciting it in Arabic is itself an act of worship; it cannot be changed and is recited according to the rules of tajwid. Reward is gained when reciting beautiful verses; some scholars even say there is a separate reward for each letter.
A supplication, on the other hand, is a word or request a servant says when turning to Allah. It can be considered in three main types: duas taken from the Quran, duas collected from the Sunnah, and supplications a person makes in their own words. The concepts of the supplication of the day and the verse of the day are the practice of starting each day with a spiritual reminder.
