A tonne is 1,000 kg, but “ton” needs context

A search for 1 ton in kg usually refers to the metric tonne, which equals exactly 1,000 kilograms. That is the tonne option used by this weight converter. A US short ton is 2,000 lb, about 907.185 kg, while an imperial long ton is 2,240 lb, about 1,016.047 kg. Freight documents and imported machinery may use either meaning, so check the source before entering a value labelled only as “ton.”

Three conversions worth checking before you reuse a value

There are exactly 1,000 grams in a kilogram. For kg to grams, multiply by 1,000; grams to kg uses division by 1,000. If you are asking how many grams in a kg for a recipe, 3.25 kg becomes 3,250 g and 750 g becomes 0.75 kg. These metric relationships are exact, not rounded estimates.

Pounds to kg uses the factor 0.45359237. A 150 lb parcel is therefore about 68.039 kg. Kg to pounds uses the reciprocal factor, roughly 2.20462. For ounces to grams, an ordinary avoirdupois ounce equals 28.349523125 g, so 8 oz is about 226.796 g. Precious metals commonly use the heavier 31.1035 g troy ounce, which is not available as the ordinary ounce option on this page.

Carat to gram conversion follows a separate exact relationship: one gemstone carat is 0.2 gram. Five carats equal one gram. “Carat” here measures gemstone mass; karat in US jewellery descriptions indicates gold purity and cannot be converted to grams without knowing the item's mass.

Total mode keeps a mixed shipment auditable

Suppose a shipment contains an 850 kg pallet, a 0.4 tonne machine and 12,500 g of spare parts. Entering those as separate rows gives 1,262.5 kg without preparing three manual conversions. The same result appears in grams, tonnes and pounds, while each original entry remains visible for checking. Net weight excludes packaging. Gross weight includes product and packaging, while tare is the packaging alone, so gross = net + tare. The total mode adds values you already know; it does not derive net weight from a label, calculate dimensional shipping weight or estimate postage. Material mass also needs volume and density before it can be entered here.

Everyday English uses “weight” for readings in kilograms and pounds, although physics calls those values mass. Weight force is calculated with F = m × g and expressed in newtons. This page performs weight conversion between mass units, not kilograms to newtons. Decimal results are rounded for display, so retain the original measurement and enough digits when the final total must meet a tight tolerance.
