Square Meter Calculator
Calculate room, apartment or land area in square meters. Add multiple rooms for the total m² and get a tile/flooring material estimate.
This free square meter calculator works out the area of a room, apartment, house or plot of land in m², adds up multiple rooms for a total and even gives a tile or flooring material estimate. As a quick m2 calculator, it accepts measurements in metres, centimetres or millimetres and converts the result automatically — so whether you are buying flooring, planning a renovation or comparing property listings, you get an accurate square meter calculation in seconds.
How to Calculate Square Meters
Learning how to calculate square meters is simple. For a rectangular area, the square meters formula is square meters = length (m) × width (m). For example, a bedroom 6 m long and 4 m wide is 6 × 4 = 24 m². This basic formula works for any room, apartment, field or four-sided area. You can measure in m, cm or mm — the tool automatically converts the result to m².
If you didn't measure in meters, conversion is needed: if you measured in centimeters, divide both sides by 100, or use the "Centimeters" tab. The result of the square meter calculation is always shown in m².
Calculating a House Square Meter Total for Multiple Rooms
To find the total floor area of a whole home, calculate each room separately and add them up — exactly what a house square meter calculator does. This tool lets you add as many rooms as you need, showing both the per-room breakdown and the combined total. This is ideal for ordering flooring, paint or estimating heating and cooling needs for an entire property.
Unit Conversion to m²
| Measured In | Conversion to m² | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Meters (m) | length × width | 5 × 4 = 20 m² |
| Centimeters (cm) | (length × width) ÷ 10,000 | 500 × 400 = 20 m² |
| Millimeters (mm) | (length × width) ÷ 1,000,000 | 5000 × 4000 = 20 m² |
Square Meters, Acres and Other Land Units
For larger areas such as fields and plots, square meters are often converted into acres, hectares or square feet. Use this section as a quick acre calculator reference alongside the m² result above:
- 1 acre = 4,046.86 m² (so divide your m² total by 4,046.86 to get acres).
- 1 hectare = 10,000 m² (1 ha = 2.471 acres).
- 1 m² = 10.764 square feet.
- 1 square mile = 2,589,988 m² = 640 acres.
For example, a 8,000 m² plot is 8,000 ÷ 4,046.86 ≈ 1.98 acres. Calculate the area in m² above first, then apply the factor you need.
Estimating Tile and Flooring
To order tile or flooring, take the floor area in m² and add about 10% for cuts and waste. A 20 m² room therefore needs roughly 22 m² of material. This tool includes the 10% waste allowance automatically in its estimate. For irregular rooms, break the space into rectangles, calculate each, and sum them.
Gross vs Net (Usable) Area
When comparing property listings, it helps to know which area is being quoted. Net (usable) area is the floor space inside the walls — what you actually live on. Gross area also includes the wall thickness and a share of common spaces such as stairwells and lobbies, so it is always larger. When you enter the inside dimensions of each room in this tool, you get the net floor area; to estimate gross area, surveyors typically add a percentage on top. Always check which figure an advert or contract refers to before you compare prices per m².
Typical Room Sizes
The figures below give a rough idea of how big common rooms are, useful for sanity-checking your own measurements:
- Bedroom: 12–16 m²
- Living room: 20–35 m²
- Kitchen: 8–12 m²
- Bathroom: 4–6 m²
- Hallway: 3–8 m²
These vary widely by home and country, so always measure your actual dimensions for an accurate result. Enter your length and width above — in metres, centimetres or millimetres — and the tool returns the exact area, a multi-room total and a material estimate. Frequently Asked Questions About the Square Meter Calculator
For a rectangle, square meters = length (m) × width (m). A room 6 m × 4 m is 24 m². If you measured in cm, divide each side by 100 first, or use the cm tab.
Calculate each room (length × width) and add them. This tool lets you add unlimited rooms and shows both the per-room breakdown and the combined total in m².
1 m² = 10,000 cm² = 1,000,000 mm². In cm, area in m² = (length × width) / 10,000. This tool converts automatically when you select the cm or mm unit.
Take the floor area in m² and add about 10% for cuts and waste. A 20 m² room needs roughly 22 m² of tile. This tool includes the 10% waste allowance in its estimate.
Net (usable) area is the floor space inside the walls. Gross area also includes wall thickness and shared spaces. For net floor area, measure the inside dimensions of each room.
A typical bedroom is 12–16 m², a living room 20–35 m², a bathroom 4–6 m² and a kitchen 8–12 m². These vary by home and country — always measure your actual dimensions.
