PDF to Word: Converting to an Editable Document

To export a non-editable contract, article or academic text into Microsoft Word format, use the PDF to Word feature. Converting a PDF to Word (.docx) is done by uploading a PDF that contains a text layer in the "PDF to Word" tab. The system extracts the text from each page via PDF.js and creates a standard .docx document.

An important limitation of this converter technology: scanned PDF files have no text layer, so without OCR (Optical Character Recognition) support they cannot be converted directly. This feature does not work on scanned documents that contain no text. For the best result, prefer a PDF created from the original digital source when possible. After finishing your edits, you can convert the document back with the Word to PDF tab — a quick Word to PDF step that turns your .docx back into a shareable PDF.

This process, also known as convert PDF to Word, has these steps:

1. Open the tab: Among the seven tabs in the tool, click the "PDF to Word" tab.
2. Upload the file: Drop your text-layer PDF into the upload area by drag and drop, or click the "choose" link (max. 50 MB).
3. Press the convert button: Click "Convert to Word (.docx)"; the tool extracts text from every page — completed for free, without sending data to a server.
4. Download the .docx file: When done, a download button appears; save the document to your computer and edit it.

PDF to Excel and Excel to PDF

For financial tables, statistical reports and accounting statements, PDF to Excel conversion is used frequently. In the "PDF to Excel" tab, the text in the document is analyzed, column widths are computed, and an .xlsx file is created. After the conversion completes, merged cells and formulas should be checked in Microsoft Excel, because complex table layouts may not transfer with 100% accuracy.
