PDF to Word: what you gain and what you lose

A PDF freezes the layout, so every conversion trades something away. PDF to Word hands you editable text but will not carry columns, text boxes and font positions across exactly. The rule of thumb is short: if the document needs changing, move it to Word; if it needs to travel unchanged, leave it as a PDF.

PDF to Excel only works on genuine table structures. Where numbers sit loose on the page, they land in a single column instead of cells. Accounting statements and financial reports usually convert cleanly; graphics-heavy pages do not.

Scanned files are a different matter. A scan is a photograph of paper and holds no text layer at all, so the conversion comes back empty, and that is not a fault in the tool. The check takes two seconds: open the PDF and try to select a word with the mouse. If you cannot, it is a scan.

PDF to JPG and PDF to PNG: which format, which DPI

PDF to JPG gives you small files on photographs and pages full of colour gradients. PDF to PNG is lossless and keeps edges crisp, which is what matters on text, line art and logos. Resolution follows the purpose rather than the other way round.

For a page that will only be read on screen, 150 DPI is plenty. Reserve 300 DPI for print work; otherwise the file grows three or four times over with nothing visible to show for it.

Orientation is worth settling before you convert. Pages that came out of a scanner sideways can be straightened in the Rotate PDF tab, which 90, 180 or 270 degrees. The rotation applies to the whole document rather than to a single page.

JPG to PDF: putting photos in one file

Bundling receipts, ID copies and photographed forms into a single document is the direction people reach for most. JPG to PDF is the usual name for it, though the tab takes PNG, WebP and GIF just as happily. You set A4, A3 or Letter as the page size and portrait or landscape as the orientation.

With several images the order matters. Drag the pages into position and preview the result before downloading. Phone photos are already high resolution, and scaling them up only inflates the file.

What this converter cannot do

PowerPoint presentations are not supported. The office side stops at Word (.docx) and Excel (.xlsx, .xls), both of which convert in the other direction as well, so Word to PDF is covered. There is no OCR either, which means no text can be pulled out of a scan. Password-protected files have to be unlocked first.

Everything runs in your browser's memory and no file leaves your device. The cost of that is a size ceiling that varies by tab, from 20 MB up to 150 MB, and multi-page documents near the upper end will slow the browser down.
