How far is it: by road or in a straight line?
The distance between two points can mean two different things, and the gap between them is rarely small. A straight line joins the two coordinates across the surface of the earth and ignores mountains, bays and bends. Driving distance is the length of the tarmac a car actually covers, and it comes out longer almost every time.
This distance calculator returns both figures at once, so you can weigh a flight against a drive on the same screen. The route itself is computed by OSRM running on OpenStreetMap data.
Used as a driving distance calculator it answers the road question, and the same result carries the straight-line number for comparison. Which figure you want depends on the job: fuel and time follow the road, while a rough sense of how far apart two places sit follows the line.
Cities, towns and full street addresses
City names are the common case: enter two of them and you have the distance between cities. Town and district names work the same way. A full street address narrows the result all the way down to door-to-door.
Place names repeat across the world, so a suggestion list appears as you type and lets you pick the right country or region. Borders make no difference to the calculation: an international route is handled exactly like a domestic one, and the same is true when one end is a city and the other a full address.
What the travel time assumes
The travel distance calculator estimates duration from the speed each road type allows, treating motorway, dual carriageway and urban sections separately.
That estimate contains no live traffic. It assumes an open road, ordinary weather and no stops. A Friday afternoon out of a large city will take noticeably longer than the figure shown. Winter closures are not modelled either, so mountain passes deserve a separate check in cold months. As a rough mileage calculator for expense claims or fuel budgeting the road figure is the one to use, not the straight line.
Coordinates and the map
Behind the place names the work is plain geometry. Each location is resolved to a latitude and longitude pair first, so the straight-line figure is really the distance between two coordinates on a sphere. The result is drawn on the map as well, which means the path is visible and not just the number.
What it does not do is turn-by-turn navigation. It answers one question, how far and roughly how long, and leaves the driving directions to the map app in your pocket.
