This free online stopwatch and countdown timer measures time to the millisecond or counts down to a target time, right in your browser. Use the stopwatch online for laps and splits, or set a timer with an audible alarm — a fast online timer and online countdown timer with quick presets and keyboard shortcuts, no sign-up needed.

What Is a Stopwatch? How Does an Online Digital Stopwatch Work?

A stopwatch is a time-measurement tool that measures a duration to millisecond precision. Traditional mechanical stopwatches have given way to digital and online versions. Our free online stopwatch uses the browser's requestAnimationFrame and performance.now() API to measure to millisecond precision. It needs no internet connection; the calculations run entirely on your device.

Our stopwatch and timer tool has two modes:

  • Stopwatch mode: counts up from zero. With lap/split records you can track running laps, study sessions or race sections separately.
  • Countdown mode: counts down from a time you set. When the time reaches zero, it sounds an audible alarm.

How to Use the Stopwatch: Start, Pause, Reset

Using the online stopwatch is very simple. Choose the mode at the top, then click the Start button or press Space on your keyboard. To stop counting, press the same button or key again; this time it acts as Pause. To reset, use the Reset button or the R key.

With keyboard shortcuts you can act quickly without touching the mouse:

Lap / Split Records: Tracking Time With a Stopwatch

In stopwatch mode, press the Lap button or the L key to record the total time so far and the split time since the previous lap. The split records are listed in the side panel; the fastest lap is marked green and the slowest red. This feature is especially useful for:

  • Lap tracking in sports such as running, swimming or cycling
  • Move times in chess or board games
  • Comparing the time spent per topic in study sessions
  • Recording the durations of meeting and presentation sections

Countdown Timer: How to Set a Timer

To set a timer, the countdown counts down from a time you choose and sounds an alarm when the time is up. In our digital timer you can enter hours, minutes and seconds separately, or quickly pick one of the common preset times to set a timer in a single tap.

Use CaseSuggested TimeNotes
Pomodoro Technique25 minutesFocus session, then a 5-minute break
Exam / QuizAs neededTrack the remaining time with the visual progress bar
Boiling an Egg3-10 minutesUse it as a kitchen timer
Sport Workout30-90 secondsRest between sets or interval timing
Presentation / Speech5-15 minutesKeep your speaking time under control
Meditation10-20 minutesSit quietly and be alerted by the beep

Digital Stopwatch vs Physical Stopwatch

Traditional physical stopwatches are single-button devices with limited memory. Digital stopwatch software offers advanced features such as lap records, a countdown mode, keyboard shortcuts and an audible alarm. The online stopwatch needs no app install; you can access it instantly from a phone, tablet or computer through the browser.

Hour Counter and Minute Counter: Long Measurements

The tool displays in an hours, minutes and seconds format, measuring up to a maximum of 99 hours 59 minutes 59 seconds. If you are measuring for a long time (a work marathon, a travel duration), just keep the tab open. When the tab goes to the background the browser may reduce the redraw rate; however, since the start time is recorded (using the performance.now() difference), the accuracy of the measurement is not affected.

Start the Stopwatch: Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Open the page; Stopwatch mode is active by default.
  2. Click the Start button or press Space — the timer starts.
  3. To record split times, press the Lap button or the L key.
  4. To pause, press the Pause button again; press Resume to continue from where you left off.
  5. To start over, press the Reset button or the R key.

For a countdown, first select the Countdown tab at the top, enter the time or pick one of the quick-time buttons, and start. When the time is up, an audible alarm plays. You can also review the frequently asked questions below.

Using the Online Stopwatch With the Pomodoro Technique

The Pomodoro Technique, developed by Francesco Cirillo, is a productivity method that organizes time management into blocks. The basic principle: work for 25 minutes without interruption, take a 5-minute break. Every 4 Pomodoro rounds, take a longer 15-30 minute break. The "Pomodoro (25 min)" quick button in our online countdown timer sets this time with one click. Benefits of the technique:

  • Reduces distraction by creating deep-focus blocks
  • Breaks large tasks into manageable pieces
  • Keeps break times planned and prevents burnout
  • The number of completed Pomodoros is a concrete metric for measuring productivity

A Stopwatch for Sport and Fitness

From professional athletes to amateur fitness enthusiasts, everyone uses a stopwatch. Our digital stopwatch is ideal for these sport activities:

  • Running: record each lap; compare your fastest and slowest laps with color markers.
  • HIIT Workout: with countdown mode, run 20-second intense sets and 10-second breaks in sequence.
  • Weight Training: track the 60-90 second rest between sets with the countdown timer.
  • Swimming: record pool laps as laps; compare your split times.
  • Yoga and Meditation: set a countdown for a fixed duration; practice quietly and finish the session with the audible alarm.

Boosting Productivity With a Timer: Practical Tips

These tips help boost productivity when using a timer and stopwatch:

  • Measure your morning routine prep times with the stopwatch; notice where your time goes.
  • Use a countdown timer in meetings to keep talks from running over their agenda time.
  • Limit children's homework, study or screen time with a countdown.
  • In the kitchen, precisely track cooking times for eggs, pasta or steeping tea.
  • When preparing for job interviews, measure and improve your answer times with the stopwatch.

Online Stopwatch vs a Watch Stopwatch

Smartphone stopwatches and smartwatch apps offer similar functions; but an online stopwatch has some advantages. For people working at a computer, easy access without switching apps matters. While watch apps can suffer device-locking issues, the browser-based tool runs uninterrupted as long as the screen stays on. And since it needs no app download, it can be used instantly from any device.

Online Stopwatch and Online Timer: Why Browser-Based?

Online stopwatch tools stand out with their practical setup-free nature. To "start a stopwatch", you don't need to install any app; you start using it the moment you open the page. With an online timer there are no obstacles such as app permissions, storage space or creating an account; it runs directly in the browser. This dual-mode tool — also known as a stopwatch-timer — meets two different needs on a single page with its count-up and count-down structure.

Use as a Seconds Counter and Countdown Tool

In stopwatch mode, seconds, minutes and hours can be tracked one by one; with this feature the tool also works as a precise seconds counter. In countdown mode, the set time is counted down — which makes it a perfect countdown tool. It is ideal for measuring the time left before an exam, tracking a cooking time or seeing how many seconds are left until a meeting ends.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Stopwatch / Countdown Timer

This stopwatch uses the browser's requestAnimationFrame and performance.now() API, so it measures to millisecond precision. It offers accuracy equivalent to a standard wall clock or mobile stopwatch app. When the browser tab goes to the background, some browsers reduce the update rate; this affects the on-screen display, but accuracy is not lost because the elapsed time is based on the time difference.

When the countdown reaches zero, a "Time's Up!" notice is shown on screen, an audible beep plays and the timer stops at 00:00:00. The alarm is generated with the Web Audio API; it needs no browser audio permission, but your device's sound must be on.

While the stopwatch is running, press the Lap button or the L key to record the current total time and the split time since the previous lap. All lap records are listed in order, so you can track repeated activities such as running laps, race sections or study sessions.

Space: Start / Pause. L: record a lap (in stopwatch mode, while running). R: Reset. These shortcuts are active when no form field or button is focused.

Yes. When the page is refreshed or the tab is closed, the stopwatch and countdown reset, and saved lap times are cleared. If you are measuring for a long time, keep the tab open.

The countdown timer can be used for many daily activities: exam and quiz timing, cooking and a kitchen timer, sport workout rest and set times, presentation and speech time control, and the Pomodoro technique (work 25 minutes, break 5 minutes).
