What Is a Natal Chart? Everything About Birth Charts and Star Charts
A natal chart (also known as a birth chart or star chart) is a personal astrology map showing the positions of the Sun, Moon and the planets across the zodiac at the exact moment of your birth. This free natal chart calculator — also a complete astrology chart calculator — instantly computes the sign and degree positions of all 10 planets, your rising sign, and the element-modality distribution based on your birth date, time and place. A natal chart reading requires three core pieces of information: birth date, birth time and birth place.
A birth chart is far more than just your Sun sign. For example, even if two people are born on the same day, if they are born at different times and in different cities their rising signs, Moon signs and planetary degrees will differ. This is why natal chart interpretation offers a far deeper, more personal reading than the Sun sign alone.
The 10 Planets in a Natal Chart: What Does Each Component Represent?
A natal chart calculation displays the sign, degree and element of each planet. The table below summarizes the core components of a birth chart:
| Planet / Point | What It Represents | Rate of Change |
|---|---|---|
| ☉ Sun Sign | Core identity, ego and conscious self | Changes sign ~every 30 days |
| ☽ Moon Sign | Emotional world, habits and inner life | Changes sign ~every 2.5 days |
| AC Rising Sign | Outer appearance, first impression, approach to life | Changes sign ~every 2 hours |
| ☿ Mercury | Way of thinking, communication and expression | Changes sign ~every 20 days |
| ♀ Venus | Love, sense of beauty and values | Changes sign ~every 30 days |
| ♂ Mars | Energy of action, motivation and desire | Changes sign ~every 45 days |
| ♃ Jupiter | Growth, luck and areas of expansion | Changes sign ~every 12 months |
| ♄ Saturn | Discipline, responsibility and karmic lessons | Changes sign ~every 2.5 years |
| ⛢ Uranus | Innovation, freedom and sudden change | Changes sign ~every 7 years |
| ♆ Neptune | Intuition, imagination and spirituality | Changes sign ~every 14 years |
| ♇ Pluto | Transformation, power and generational influence | Changes sign ~every 20 years |
How Does Natal Chart Calculation Work?
This tool uses astronomical formulas based on the J2000.0 reference epoch together with DST (daylight saving) correction. The calculation process consists of the following steps:
- Julian Day Number: The entered date and time are converted into a universal astronomical time reference.
- Conversion to UTC: Local time is converted to UTC based on the birth place and its daylight saving rule; region-specific DST rules are applied separately.
- Planetary Longitudes: The ecliptic longitude is calculated for the Sun, Moon and 8 planets; this value determines which sign and degree each planet occupies.
- Rising Sign (ASC): The eastern horizon point is found using GMST (Greenwich Mean Sidereal Time), the longitude and the latitude of the birth place. Since the rising sign changes roughly every 2 hours, the birth time is critical.
- Element and Modality Distribution: The Fire / Earth / Air / Water and Cardinal / Fixed / Mutable distribution of the 10 planets is calculated to determine the overall energy structure of the chart.
Natal Chart Interpretation: The Sun, Moon and Rising Triangle
In a thorough natal chart interpretation, astrologers focus on three core axes:
- Sun - Moon - Rising Triangle: The Sun represents the conscious self, the Moon emotional reactions, and the Rising how the world sees us. This trio is the core of personality readings.
- Inner Planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars): Daily communication style, the way you form relationships and how you manage energy are read through these planets.
- Outer Planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto): Long-term areas of development, generational influences and deep transformation processes are associated with these planets.
Element and Modality Distribution: Key to Natal Chart Analysis
In natal chart analysis, how many planets fall in each element reveals the dominance of that element's influence:
- Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): High energy, enterprise, inspiration and action focus. Fire-heavy charts stand out with leadership and motivational power.
- Earth Signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): Practicality, patience and concrete goals. Earth-heavy charts are strong in career and long-term planning.
- Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): Intelligence, communication and sociability. Air-heavy charts show clear competence in forming relationships and conceptual thinking.
- Water Signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): Deep emotion, intuition and empathy. Water-heavy charts stand out in matters of psychological depth.
Modality distribution shows how you respond to change: Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) are initiating and pioneering; Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) are steady and stable; Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) carry an adaptable and flexible structure.
The Natal Chart Wheel: How to Read the Zodiac Circle
The tool presents your calculated birth chart as a visual natal chart wheel. From the outside in, you see the following layers: The outermost ring shows the 12 zodiac symbols colored by element (red = Fire, yellow = Earth, blue = Air, green = Water). In the inner circle the 10 planets are placed with their symbolic glyphs; hovering over them reveals the planet name, its sign and its degree. The AC label marks the Rising point and DC the opposite point; the dashed line between them represents the horizon (the ASC-DSC axis). Planets close together are nudged slightly to avoid overlap; a thin line indicates the planet's true position.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Natal Chart Calculator
A natal chart (birth chart) is a snapshot of the positions of the planets in the sky at the exact moment of your birth. It covers your Sun sign, Moon sign, Rising sign and the signs of all 10 planets, revealing different dimensions of personality astrologically.
To calculate a natal chart you need your birth date, birth time and birth place. Birth time is essential; because the rising sign changes roughly every two hours, you must enter the exact time.
A star chart and a natal chart are mostly used interchangeably. A simple sign reading may be limited to the Sun sign, while a natal chart includes the positions of all planets; so the natal chart is more comprehensive.
This tool uses simplified astronomical formulas based on the J2000.0 reference epoch. For the Sun and inner planets the deviation is usually around 1-3 degrees. For a professional natal chart, Swiss Ephemeris based software is recommended.
In natal chart interpretation the Sun, Moon and Rising triangle forms the foundation of personality. The element distribution (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) and modality distribution (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable) define the overall energy structure of the chart. For an in-depth analysis, working with an astrologer is recommended.
Everyone's chart has different positions for the Moon, Mercury, Venus and the other planets. The rising sign and element distribution make each chart unique; that is why two people with the same Sun sign can differ greatly in character and approach to life.
