A rising sign belongs to a moment, not a date range
What does rising sign mean? In Western astrology, the ascendant is the zodiac sign at the intersection of the ecliptic and eastern horizon at the birth moment. A date on its own cannot identify that point. The same 8:10 AM local time in Chicago and London represents a different UTC instant, longitude and view of the horizon.
That is why a universal rising sign chart based on two-hour slots is misleading. There are no fixed rising sign dates comparable to sun-sign dates. A calculation needs the full date, the recorded local time and the birthplace together. The result can run from Aries rising through Pisces rising. Traits and compatibility shown in the card are traditional entertainment readings, not measured facts about a person.
What the calculator does with local birth time
The first step converts the recorded wall-clock time to UTC. Applying today's offset to an older birth can be wrong because governments have changed time zones and daylight-saving rules. This page uses the historical IANA zone data available in the browser, then takes the selected city center's latitude and longitude.
From the UTC instant, the script obtains a Julian day and Greenwich mean sidereal time. Adding longitude gives local sidereal time; latitude and the obliquity of the ecliptic locate the eastern-horizon intersection. Its 30-degree zodiac segment is the ascendant sign. For the most accurate result available here, copy the minute from a birth certificate or hospital record. A few minutes matter mainly near a sign boundary. If the actual birthplace is far from the listed city center, location can become another source of a boundary difference.
If the birth record has no time
Leave the time field empty. The zodiac sign calculator will then show only the conventional sun sign by birth date. Entering noon as a guess produces the ascendant for noon, not the person's unknown birth moment.
The sun sign calculator on this page uses familiar calendar ranges; it does not calculate the Sun's exact ecliptic longitude. An ephemeris can therefore return another sign on a boundary date after accounting for the year, time and zone.
