Final Grade Calculator
Calculate a weighted course grade or find the final exam score needed for your own target and course rules.
* The selected weight must match your syllabus. The calculator does not assume a universal letter-grade or pass/fail scale.
The weight in your syllabus changes the answer
A midterm score of 60 and an end-of-term exam score of 80 do not always produce a course grade of 70. If the first assessment is worth 30 percent and the second is worth 70 percent, the weighted grade is 74. Use this midterm final grade calculator only when one of the three listed weight splits matches your syllabus. A course with another split or more than two graded components needs its full formula.
The formula is: weighted course grade = midterm × midterm weight + final × final weight. Percentages are used as decimals. With scores of 65 and 75 on a 40/60 split, the calculation is 65 × 0.40 + 75 × 0.60 = 71. This is the part of a college grade calculator that can be known from the scores alone.
A university grade calculator should not turn 71 into a letter grade without knowing the course policy. Fixed cutoffs, curves, separate exam minimums, and rounding rules differ. Some classes include quizzes, projects, or labs too. If those items have already been combined into the midterm component, enter that combined score. If they are separate parts of the formula, use the result here only as a two-part estimate.
This calculation is also different from GPA. A GPA calculator combines completed course grades with credit hours. The tool on this page handles one course and does not claim that its numeric result equals a particular GPA value.
Work backward from the course grade you want
The second mode answers “what grade do I need on my final?” Enter the midterm, its percentage, and your target course grade. The final grade calculator rearranges the same equation. With a first score of 50, a 40 percent weight, and a target of 60, the required exam score is 66.67 because the second assessment carries the remaining 60 percent.
The result is a mathematical boundary. If your school records whole-number exam scores, aim above a decimal result rather than assuming it will be rounded in your favor. A small margin also protects against a syllabus rule that rounds only after all components are combined.
A separate final exam minimum can override the average
Suppose the weighted formula says that 42 on the final is enough, but the course requires at least 50 on that exam itself. The stricter requirement is 50. Treat the passing grade calculator result as one boundary, compare it with the separate exam minimum in the syllabus, and plan for the higher score.
A curve or relative grading system cannot be predicted from one student’s scores. The class distribution may change the final letter grade after every exam is marked. For that reason, this weighted grade average calculator reports the numeric result and leaves the school-specific conversion to the syllabus or registrar.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Final Grade Calculator
Multiply each score by its percentage weight and add the contributions. With a 40 percent midterm and 60 percent final, the formula is midterm times 0.40 plus final exam times 0.60. This is the same arithmetic a course grade calculator uses for a two-part course.
Enter your midterm score, its weight, and the course grade you want. The final exam calculator mode rearranges the weighted formula and returns the minimum score needed for that target.
No. Letter grade cutoffs, GPA points, curves, and rounding policies vary by school and course. A semester grade average calculator or GPA calculator also combines completed courses, while this page calculates one course.
Compare the calculated score with the separate minimum in your syllabus and use whichever requirement is higher. A midterm and final grade calculator cannot infer that course-specific threshold.
