This free Chinese gender predictor guesses whether you are having a boy or a girl from the traditional Chinese gender chart, using the mother's lunar age and the month of conception. As a baby gender predictor and a fun boy or girl predictor, it reads the same Chinese birth chart gender grid generations have used. It is purely for entertainment and has no medical or scientific accuracy.

What Is the Chinese Calendar? How Does the Chinese Gender Predictor Work?

The Chinese calendar is a 700-year-old traditional calendar with roots in ancient Chinese empires and lunar cycles. Built on it, the Chinese gender prediction method aims to guess a baby's gender — the biggest curiosity for expectant mothers. Developed by palace diviners before modern medicine, it is used today by millions worldwide for fun and curiosity.

The Chinese gender chart rests on two variables: the mother's Chinese (lunar) age at conception and the Chinese-calendar month of conception (or planning). The chart contains "Girl" or "Boy" predictions for each month from January to December for mothers aged 18 to 45. Modern gender predictor tools combine this ancient chart with digital algorithms to remove the risk of an incorrect age calculation.

Chinese Lunar Age: How Does It Differ From Your Calendar Age?

The biggest mistake when predicting gender by the Chinese calendar is using the mother's normal (calendar) age. The Chinese lunar age formula differs from the calendar we use. In Chinese belief, the baby is considered to have completed its 9 months in the womb and is counted as 1 year old at birth. Also, because the Chinese New Year falls in late January or early February each year, the calculation is shaped accordingly.

The standard algorithm for Chinese lunar age is:

  • If your birth month is January or February: add +2 years to the difference between your conception (or planning) year and your birth year.
  • If your birth month is March through December: add +1 year to the difference between the conception year and your birth year.

Our tool analyses the mother's birth date and the month of conception in seconds, finds your lunar age automatically and marks the correct intersection on the classic chart for you.

When Is the Baby's Gender Known? At What Week?

One of the most common questions is "At what week is the gender known?". Medically and biologically, a baby's gender is set at the moment of conception, when sperm and egg meet. If the sperm carries an X chromosome the baby is a girl (XX); a Y chromosome makes it a boy (XY). So when you make a baby gender prediction, the biological result is already decided.

Physically, when the gender becomes visible depends on the baby's anatomical development. The genitals start to differentiate from about week 11. An experienced perinatologist or obstetrician can make a largely accurate estimate between weeks 12 and 14 with high-resolution ultrasound. But a definitive determination — provided the baby's position is favourable — is usually made during the routine anatomy scan at weeks 16 to 20 (months 4 to 5). So the safest answer to "at what month is the gender known?" is the end of month 4 or month 5.

Chinese Gender Chart (Summary: Ages 20–35)

The table below summarises the most-used age range (lunar age 20–35) of the Chinese gender chart. G = Girl prediction, B = Boy prediction.

Lunar Age Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec

25GBBGGBGBBBBB
28BGBGGGBBBBGG
30BGGGGGGGGGBB
33GBGBGGGBGGGB

The values in the table match the chart used by the tool exactly. Use the calculator above for all ages 18–45.

Gender Selection by Month and Planned Pregnancy

Popularly known as the best gender prediction calendar, the Chinese calendar is used not only to predict gender in existing pregnancies but also for gender selection by month in planned pregnancies. With the mother's age fixed, conceiving in different months is believed to give different gender results.

For example, a woman with a Chinese age of 25 who conceives in February, April, May or June would see "Boy" in the chart. But the same woman conceiving in January or March would see "Girl". Couples can use our tool to identify the months matching their desired gender and shape their (for-fun) pregnancy planning accordingly. This can also be combined with an ovulation calculator to target the most fertile days.

How Accurate Is the Chinese Gender Calendar?

The accuracy of Chinese gender prediction has been debated for centuries. Internet legends claim over 90% accuracy. But modern medicine and retrospective statistical studies have shown the chart has no biological basis. The scientific answer to "how accurate is the Chinese gender calendar" is: 50%.

Because a baby's gender is a two-outcome event like a coin flip, the calendar's predictions naturally come true about half the time. Treat this baby gender calculator as a fun game: never take the Chinese gender predictor result as medical fact, and don't rush to buy pink or blue. For a definitive answer, wait for the medical diagnosis your doctor gives from ultrasound images. To track how long until your due date and your baby's week-by-week development, you can also use our pregnancy calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Chinese Gender Predictor

The Chinese calendar is not a medical diagnostic method and has no proven scientific basis. It is a fun prediction tool based on traditional belief. Statistically its accuracy is around 50%, just like a coin flip. For a definitive result, always wait for an ultrasound or medical tests.

Chinese (lunar) age is calculated differently from your calendar age. It is usually found by adding 1 or 2 years to your calendar age. If you were born in January or February, your age may increase by +2 depending on whether you were born before or after the Chinese New Year. For other months, +1 is added.

In the Chinese calendar, the main factor determining the baby's gender is the month conception occurred. The first day of your last period, or the conception time from your doctor's ultrasound, is taken as the month of conception. Knowing this date precisely is important for an accurate prediction.

No. According to the Chinese calendar, the baby's gender depends not only on the mother's age but also on the month of conception. Women of the same age who conceive in different months will get different (girl or boy) predictions from the chart.

Many people use the Chinese calendar as a reference for planned pregnancy. In the row matching the mother's age, the months with the desired gender can be identified to plan a pregnancy in those months. However, this method has no medical guarantee.

The baby's gender is actually set at conception. But for it to be visible on ultrasound, the genitals must develop. Experienced specialists can estimate at weeks 12-14, though a definitive determination is usually made at the detailed ultrasound at weeks 16-20.
